Scripture

Ezekiel 29:1-30:26; Hebrews 11:32-12:13; Psalm 112:1-10; Proverbs 27:17

Observation

“Egypt will no longer be a source of confidence for the people of Israel but will be a reminder of their sin in turning to her for help. Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.” Ezekiel 29:16

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
Hebrews 12:1-3

“Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness.”
Hebrews 12:10

“Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man. Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice. Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. …but the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.” Psalm 112:4-6, 10b

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

Application

When we place our confidence in anyone or anything other than God, we live to regret it. It becomes a painful reminder of our sin.

Fixing my eyes upon Jesus not only helps me to run the race of faith well, it also keeps me from losing heart and growing weary. I’m reminded of Isaiah 40:28-31.

God’s discipline prepares me to share in His holiness. If I would only see discipline in this light rather than as punishment or as a sign of abandonment.

We need to live in relationship with one another and guard Christian community because we help to challenge and sharpen one another.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to run with endurance. I get so easily discouraged and side-tracked. Help me to stay on course, complete the race, and honor You in the process.”
