*Today marks my final journal since I started last year on 1-15-08. I will continue to send out notes & observations on Scripture – probably in a different format, and perhaps not daily. I trust that the reading of God’s Word has blessed you greatly, and I hope that it has created within you a lifelong thirst and hunger. Blessings!

Scripture

Genesis 30:1-31:16; Matthew 10:1-25; Psalm 12:1-8; Proverbs 3:13-15

Observation

“Am I in the place of God?..” Genesis 30:2

“The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I do something for my own household?” Genesis 30:30

The commission which Jesus gave to the 12 disciples in Matthew 10:5-6 is very different than the Great Commission:

“Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.”

“Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues. On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Matthew 10:17-20

Application

I failed to mention in yesterday’s journal that the other exciting part of Leah’s resolve to praise God for her son Judah is that Christ came from the line of Judah.

Jacob’s words to Rachel, “Am I in the place of God…” struck me as interesting because so often we act like we are – or others depend upon us, and blame us as if we are.

God always desired for all the nations of the earth to be blessed through His people the Jews. This is why the commission to the 12 is specifically targeted at the Jews at the beginning of Christ’s ministry. The focus of the commission shifts to the world after Christ’s resurrection because even though the Jews had rejected God’s Messiah, still all the nations would indeed be blessed through a Jew: Jesus! And, the Gospel message was in fact for all people.

I love the end of Matthew 10:20 when Jesus says that in times of persecution we should not worry about how we will defend ourselves or what we will say because, “the Spirit of our Father will speak through us!” What a beautiful thought and promise! This makes me think of the old saying, “God’s will never leads us where His grace cannot sustain us!”

Prayer

“Lord, thank You for Your Word. Thank You that You have not left us to aimlessly follow after You. You have revealed Your will, Your character, Your promises, and Your intentions for us. May we be faithful to follow You.”

Genesis 28:1-29:35; Matthew 9:18-38; Psalm 11:1-7; Proverbs 3:11-12

Observation

“When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.’ He was afraid and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” Genesis 28:16-17

“So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.” Genesis 29:20

Leah named her first son Reuben because she thought, “The Lord has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now.” (Genesis 29:32) She named her second son Simeon – saying, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, He gave me this one too.” (29:33) She named her third son Levi thinking, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” (29:34) Finally, she named her fourth and final son Judah, and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Then she stopped having children. (29:35)

“When He (Jesus) saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
Matthew 9:36

“My son, do not reject the discipline of the Lord Or resent His reproof, for whom the Lord loves He disciplines, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.” Proverbs 3:11-12

Application

God’s presence turns even the most ordinary of places into places which are windows/gates to heaven. So often God is at work in a person, or a place or a situation and we were not even aware of it. Becoming aware of God’s presence and activity in this world is crucial to seeing His power and being involved in His plan.

There’s a beautiful lesson in Leah’s struggle and the naming of her sons. Reuben: The Lord has seen me – maybe my husband will notice me now. Simeon: God has heard me – maybe Jacob will hear my distress. Levi: God has attached Himself to my plight – maybe Jacob will become attached to me. But, the last name – Judah: “I will praise the Lord,” represents a shift in Leah’s thinking and spiritual condition. Leah has now found hope, perspective and strength in God alone. It doesn’t matter what Jacob thinks about her or how he treats her; she is resolved to praise her God regardless.

Prayer

“Lord, grant me the inner fortitude to praise You consistently despite my life circumstances. The love and affirmation of others is nice, but it will never sustain me. Help me to find my strength, my equilibrium, in You.”

Observation

“That night the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of My servant Abraham.” Genesis 26:24

“When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, ‘Bless me – me too, my father! …Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!’ Then Esau wept aloud.”
Genesis 27:34, 38

“…the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins…”
Matthew 9:6

“Jesus said, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Matthew 9:12-13

Application

The God of the Bible, the God of our forefathers, is the same God who promises to be with us and bless us. We don’t have to be afraid or anxious because God’s past actions bring us assurance and confidence that He will continue to be faithful in the future.

Genesis 27:34, 38 caused me to reflect on how many sons, how many daughters, are looking for their father’s blessing; and, wondering if his blessing is only good for one child, or if there is enough for all.

True ministry involves ministering to the sick and needy, not the healthy and content. And, our mindset needs to be one of mercy rather than sacrifice (imposition/obligation).

Prayer

“Lord, thank You for an earthly father who loves me and believes in me. This has made it so much easier for me to trust Your love for me.”

Observation

“Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.”
Genesis 25:21

“Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him. The man (Isaac) became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.” Genesis 26:12-13

“In his pride the wicked does not seek Him (God); in all his thoughts there is no room for God. …He says to himself, ‘Nothing will shake me; I’ll always be happy and never have trouble.’ …He says to himself, ‘God has forgotten; He covers His face and never sees. …He won’t call me to account.’ …But You, O God, do see trouble and grief; You consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless.” Psalm 10:4, 6, 11, 13b, 14

Application

Isaac’s prayer to God on behalf of Rebekah’s barrenness was a much better method to fertility than sleeping with his wife’s servant! (Abraham) Isaac got this right. But, in Genesis 26:7 he tries to pass Rebekah off as his sister before King Abimelech –like father, like son!

I was struck and challenged by the description of a wicked man: He does not seek God; there is no room for God in his thoughts; he believes he is unshakeable; he subscribes to the myth that he’ll always be happy and never have problems; he thinks that God has forgotten about him and will never hold him accountable. Some of these characteristics sound like my own self-deception from time to time.

Prayer

“Lord, I take comfort in knowing that nothing escapes Your notice. You are sovereign. You are righteous. No one outsmarts You. Thank You that You are fair and merciful as well.”

Observation

“He said to his servants, ‘Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”
Genesis 22:5

“Abraham answered, ‘God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Genesis 22:8

“So, Abraham called that place, ‘The Lord will provide.” Genesis 22:14

“And, through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed Me.” Genesis 22:18

“Watch out for false prophets. …By their fruit you will recognize them. …A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.”
Matthew 7:15-18

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
Matthew 7:24

“When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.” Matthew 7:28-29

Application

Abraham did not know that God would provide a sacrifice in place of his son Isaac; but, in faith and trust he affirms this to Isaac. And, his exact words to his servants are, “We will worship and then we will come back to you.” Wow!

First of all, worship is obedience – pure and simple. Worship is not merely some warm fuzzy we get when we sing the particular praise song that we like. It’s obedience – even when it’s hard and we don’t understand God’s ways (especially at these times).

Second, notice that Abraham, in faith, said, “We will come back to you.” This indicates that Abraham really did believe that God would somehow provide. And, God ultimately did provide a lamb: His son, Jesus. He is that Rock upon which every wise man and woman builds their house.

Finally, what a thought, what a promise, that “all the nations of the earth” would be blessed because Abraham obeyed God. I’ve only thought about the personal blessings, or family blessings, that come as a result of obedience. But, what a beautiful thought that all the earth has the potential to be blessed through our faithful obedience to God – through the “fruit” of our life!

Prayer

“Lord, find me faithful. Help me to obey You at all times – not just when it’s convenient or easy. Please use me to bless the lives of others. Thank You for Your amazing plan! Your ways are definitely higher than mine!”

Genesis 18:20-19:38; Matthew 6:25-7:14; Psalm 8:1-9; Proverbs 2:6-15

Observation

I have often looked at Genesis 18:23ff. as a great example of God’s mercy and compassion in His vow to not wipe out the whole territory of Sodom & Gomorrah if 50 righteous people were found (45, 40, 30, 20, 10). But, what a sad commentary that apparently not even 10 could be found! How bad is a city when you can’t even find 10 people who fear the Lord? And, our answer to this comes in chapter 19 when we read about every man in the city (both young and old – think about that!) attempting to beat down Lot’s door in order that they might have their way with his male guests (angels). That’s just sick!

I wonder how many years had elapsed between Abraham’s offer to Lot to pick whatever piece of land looked best to him, and this catastrophic moment of divine judgment. Talk about having your investment go up in smoke!

The story of Lot’s daughters getting him drunk in order to continue their father’s lineage is further proof to me that the Bible is a divine rather than human record. Had the master editor been anyone other than God, this record would certainly have been edited, censored, or removed altogether! Our whole OT reading today documents a pretty ugly, embarrassing point in biblical history.

“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? …Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:27, 34

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8

Application

We often talk in religious circles of “standing-in-the-gap.” This catch phrase/principle is certainly appropriate and enlightening in view of the fact that Sodom & Gomorrah could have been spared if there had been 10 righteous people.

As I read Matthew 7:7-8 I could not help but think that I/we don’t seek enough. I don’t knock enough. And, I certainly don’t ask enough. I need to trust that my Heavenly Father wants to bless me and use me in ways that I have not even considered.

Prayer

“Lord, thank You for opening doors when I knock, for answering me when I ask, and for meeting me when I seek. Thank You for Your incredible mercy and grace.”

Genesis 16:1-18:19; Matthew 6:1-24; Psalm 7:1-17; Proverbs 2:1-5

Observation

Abram agreed to Sarai’s plan to help God with His promise of offspring. This led to Sarai despising Hagar and feeling that Abram was responsible for the wrong which she felt she was suffering.

I couldn’t help seeing a similarity (however vague) between the angel of the Lord meeting Hagar near the spring in the desert (Genesis 16:7), and Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well in John 4.

I love the name which Hagar gives to the Lord in Genesis 16:13: “You are the God who sees me.”

Genesis 18:1ff speaks of God’s appearance to Abraham in the form of 3 men. This seems like a reference to some physical manifestation of the Trinity.

Application

God does not need our help in fulfilling His promises. We only complicate the process when we take things into our own hands. It’s interesting that Abram was 86 years old (Gen. 16:16) when Ishmael was born, and 99 years old (Gen. 17:1) when the angel of the Lord finally appeared to him to announce the fulfillment of God’s previous promise. This makes me wonder if Abram & Sarai added 3 unnecessary years to God’s timetable/plan.

Prayer

“Lord, thank You that You are ‘the God who sees me.’ You are aware of everything, including my humble circumstances. You are aware, You care, and You have the power to affect change.”

Genesis 13:5-15:21; Matthew 5:27-48; Psalm 6:1-10; Proverbs 1:29-33

Observation

“So Abram said to Lot, ‘Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers. Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.” (Genesis 13:8-9) Of course Lot picked the land that was well-watered, “like the garden of the Lord.” But, then there’s the interesting side note: “This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.”

“After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:

‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward!”
Genesis 15:1

“Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.”
Genesis 15:6

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: ‘Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. …If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?” Matthew 5:43-44, 46-47

Application

If I had been in Abram’ shoes I would have been pretty tweaked that my brother chose the good land. But, God sovereignly protected Abram. Who would want to raise a family in Sodom & Gomorrah? (Genesis 19 is an indication of the lack of morality in S. & G. when Lot has to offer his daughters to the homosexuals in order to protect his guests.) And, it would not be long until S. & G. (Lot’s inheritance) would be erased from the landscape! (Incidentally, it’s sad that some of the most beautiful places to live end up being some of the most sinful environments to live!)

I desire to have a faith and trust in God like Abram’s – to take God at His word.

Matthew 5 has me asking myself how often I befriend those who are hurtful to me or who have nothing to offer me.

Prayer

“Lord, thank You for being my shield and my very great reward. Help me to keep this perspective: that You are my reward and not earthly treasures.”

Observation

“The Lord said, ‘If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” Genesis 11:5-7

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. …all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:2-3

“Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake (at your expense) and my life will be spared because of you.” Genesis 12:13

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
Matthew 5:6, 8

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16

Application

Genesis 5:11ff has always bothered me. The wording of the passage makes it sound like God was fearful or even threatened by the unified ambitions of mankind. Nothing could be further from the truth! Paul affirms in 1 Corinthians 1:25 that,

“The foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”

Genesis 11 is simply one of those passages (like Genesis 3:22-23) in which God is saving us from ourselves – saving us from the consequences of our sin. Nothing good ever results from a dream or ambition which begins with a motivation like: “Come let us make a name for ourselves…” (11:4)

Matthew 5:8 challenged me to look at holiness and purity as a means to seeing God! Often, I/we only look at a subject like holiness in terms of the negative consequences of not obeying God’s commands.

Prayer

“Lord, help my light to shine for all to see. May others see You in me; and, may they trust You as Savior and Lord, giving You all the glory.”

Genesis 8:1-10:32; Matthew 4:12-25; Psalm 4:1-8; Proverbs 1:20-23

Observation

“I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” Genesis 9:13

“Know that the Lord has set apart the godly for Himself; the Lord will hear when I call to Him. …Many are asking, ‘Who can show us any good?’ Let the light of Your face shine upon us, O Lord. You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound.” Psalm 4:3, 6-7

Application

Psalm 4:6 challenges me to always make sure to give God the credit for the good in my life, the blessing which I enjoy. Many in the world are asking, “Where’s the good in these messed-up times in which we live?” We as Christians, of all people, should find it very easy to answer that question. When I fail to give testimony to God’s goodness in my life, I miss a crucial opportunity to see an unbeliever drawn to the Giver of every good and perfect gift.

Prayer

“Lord, may I give testimony to Your goodness each and every day of my life. You have filled my heart with joy. Thank You for hearing me when I call.”

Genesis 5:1-7:24; Matthew 3:7-4:11; Psalm 3:1-8; Proverbs 1:10-19

Observation

Just about everyone knows that Methuselah lived longer than anyone else in history: 969 years. His name means, “When he dies it will come.” And, when he died the great flood came. I had forgotten, however, that Jared lived almost as long as Methuselah – 962 years! I also think it’s hilarious that Noah did not start having kids until he was 500 years old! Talk about being embarrassed at back-to-school night: “Hey, is Father Time your dad?!”

Genesis 2:4 is just plain weird! Is this Scriptural support for the gods of mythology: Hercules, Zeus,.. This is a sketchy and isolated proof text – not worth building an argument or theory upon, but interesting nonetheless.

“Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” Matthew 3:8

“It is written…It is written…It is written…” Matthew 4:4-10

Application

Matthew 3:8 is one of those passages which convicts and challenges me no matter how many times I read it. Does my life give evidence of true repentance? Is there visible, tangible proof of my gratefulness for my salvation – seen through the fruit of my life? I hope so! I am certainly not to keep sinning that grace may abound (Romans 6:1). I am to bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

Each time Jesus was tempted and confronted by Satan He responded by quoting Scripture. The Word of God is “living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword…” (Hebrews 4:12) Scripture is definitely the best way to ward off temptation and stand strong against the enemy’s attacks. Reason #1,000 for committing God’s Word to memory; and, for reading through the Bible on a daily basis!

Prayer

“Lord, thank You for Your Word. Thank You for the power, protection and wisdom of Your Word. Help me to be ‘diligent to present myself approved, as a workman who need not be ashamed, handling accurately Your Word of Truth.”

Observation

“Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’ ‘…You will not surely die,’ the serpent said to the woman. ‘For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:1b, 4-5

“At that time men began to call on the name of the Lord.” Genesis 3:26b

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Proverbs 1:7

Application

Satan begins to tempt us and confuse us by first causing us to doubt God’s Word: “Did God really say…” He exaggerates the restriction in order to play upon our sense of injustice: “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree…” Next, he questions the consequences of sin: “You will not surely die.” Finally, he makes us think that God is holding-out on us: “God knows that…you will be like (Him),” never mind the fact that the knowledge of evil was the worst thing for Adam and Eve (and all of us!)

May 2009 be a year when men (and women) begin to call upon the name of the Lord!

Prayer

“Lord, help me to always trust that You know what is best for me; and, that if You have commanded something in Your Word, it is for my own good. Grant me strength, discipline and passion to follow You faithfully in 2009!”

Observation

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness… So, God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him: male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:26a, 27

“The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.’ For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” Genesis 2:23-24

“But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of My people Israel.” Matthew 2:6

“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked… but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” Psalm 1:1a-2
Application

God spoke of raising up a shepherd for His people in Matthew 2:6. I love that this term is used. First and foremost we need(ed) a Messiah. But, God knew we also would need a shepherd. As leaders of God’s people we must never forget God’s heart: He wants shepherds – not dictators or CEO’s, but shepherds who care and have an investment in the sheep.

Prayer

“Lord, thank You that You are my shepherd. I lack nothing in You. Draw me to Yourself. Lead me in green pastures. Restore my soul. Comfort me with Your rod and staff. May I live in Your presence, both now, and forever more.”

Observation

“Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, ‘How have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you! Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, ‘if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.”
Malachi 3:8-10

“You have said harsh things against Me,’ says the Lord. Yet you ask, ‘What have we said against You?’ You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What did we gain by carrying out His requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty?” Malachi 3:13-14

“There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.” Revelation 22:5

Application

Sometimes we feel like it’s futile to serve God. But, this is because we measure the “gain” according to earthly standards. We don’t serve God to secure all the things we ever wanted. We serve God because He is worthy of our praise - even if we never receive any recognizable benefit; and, because only our Creator knows the means to our greatest fulfillment.

Prayer

“Lord, I can’t comprehend the future glory spoken of in the book of Revelation. I look forward to that day. Help me to be faithful now – to do my part. Thank You for Your promises, Your presence and the strength which You supply.”

Observation

Would he accept you?’ says the Lord Almighty. …Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on My altar!” Malachi 1:8, 10a

“And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. Application

God would rather have us close the church doors than to offer Him imperfect and insincere sacrifices. David wrote in Psalm 51:17,

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.”

It’s easy for me to pay lip service to God, or to go through the motions of religiosity; and yet, my heart can still be far from Him, far from being fully-surrendered. God wants my heart more than anything else - everything flows from the heart.

Prayer

“Lord, create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within me. Help me to live fully-surrendered before You.”

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” Proverbs 31:8-9

Application

God gives each one of us opportunities to “speak for those who cannot speak for themselves,” to represent the “rights of all who are destitute,” and to “defend the rights of the poor and the needy.” The challenge is to not only recognize these opportunities but also to act upon them and be Christ’s tangible presence on earth.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to seize the opportunities You send my way. May I not miss the chance to see You through encounters with those who are in need.”

Observation

“Praise the Lord. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise Him! …He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is the Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit.”
Revelation 19:1, 3-5

Application

Praise and thanksgiving are both pleasant and fitting for the King of kings and Lord of lords. It’s easy to praise God for the good things He does – for His kindness, mercy, grace and forgiveness. But, I need to praise God more for just who He is. God is good and awesome – even when there are challenges in my life. God does not cease to be worthy of praise when I experience trials that seem contradictory to my expectations of what a loving father would allow, should allow. He is sovereign. He knows what He’s doing. “His understanding has no limit!” (Psalm 147:5b)

Prayer

“Lord, may my life be one of continuous praise to You. Help me to bless Your name at all times. Help me to see Your sovereign, providential hand in all of life’s events. Help me to trust You – especially in times when I don’t understand You.”

The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but He frustrates the ways of the wicked.”

Application

God’s faithfulness is described in Psalm 146 in terms of His heart for the oppressed: the hungry, the prisoner, the blind, the discouraged, the alien, the fatherless and the widow. I have to ask myself, “How much of my time, my day, is devoted to helping people in these categories?” It’s not just about pleasing my heavenly Father by doing good deeds, it’s about seeking to be His presence here on earth by doing the things He would do if He were here.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to be faithful to those who need an advocate. Help me to defend those who can’t defend themselves. Thank You for being faithful to me and for helping me in my helplessness.”

Observation

“They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because He is Lord of lords and King of kings – and with Him will be His called, chosen and faithful followers.” Revelation 17:14

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.”
Psalm 145:18

Application

Psalm 145:18 says that “The Lord is near to all who call on Him.” But, then it qualifies this statement with: “To all who call on Him in truth.” God does not demand moral perfection in order to hear our prayers, but He does require sincerity. “Calling on God in truth” also means approaching Him biblically – in the manner in which His Word has prescribed.

Prayer

“Lord, thank You for being a God who is near and not distant. I look forward to the day You will overcome those who wage war against You. How reassuring it is to know that I’m on the winning side.”

Observation

I was struck by the fact that those who experience God’s wrath during the end times still refuse to repent and turn to God. Revelation 16:9 says, “They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify God.” And, the end of 16:11says, “…but they refused to repent of what they had done.” It’s unfortunate that God’s punishment solidifies the stubborn rebelliousness of the unbelieving. One would hope that these end time events would break through any residual shred of disbelief and provide an opportunity for redemption.

“Behold, I come like a thief! Blessed is he who stays awake and keeps his clothes with him, so that he may not go naked and be shamefully exposed.”
Revelation 16:15

Application

This passage in Revelation adds new perspective to Hebrews 4:7b,

“Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”

Hebrews 3:12-13 is also pertinent with respect to our reading in Revelation:

“Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you and evil, unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God. But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called ‘Today,’ lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”
All I can say about Revelation 16:15 is that the Apostle John definitely seems to be recommending that people sleep clothed!

Prayer

“Lord, thank You once again for the blessing of family and extended family who know You and have a saving relationship with You. Help me to spend my time pointing others to the hope and salvation which is only found in You.”

Observation

Zechariah 7:9

“When I called they did not listen; so when they called I would not listen,’ says the Lord Almighty.” Zechariah 7:13

“I spread out my hands to You; my soul thirsts for You like a parched land. …Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; may Your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” Psalm 143:6, 10

Application

Zechariah 7:13 is one of those verses that calls us out in our hypocrisy. Why should I/we expect God to listen to our prayers and desires if we blatantly disregard His Word and commandments.

I love the wording of Psalm 143:10: “lead me on level ground.” I think of the image of a shepherd leading sheep where they need to go, yet sensitively choosing level terrain.

Prayer

“Lord, lead me where I need to go. I would love for the road to be level and the journey enjoyable, but I trust You. Lead on O King Eternal. Thank You for Your birth, for Your sacrifice, and for Your unconditional love which encompasses me every moment of every day.”

Observation

“This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.” Zechariah 4:6

“This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God’s commandments and remain faithful to Jesus.” Revelation 14:12

Application

Zechariah 4:6 is a great reminder that it’s all about God’s power and Spirit, not my feeble efforts. If I really believed this I would spend more time in prayer and less time worrying and striving.

Revelation 14:12 repeats and follows-up on Revelation 13:10,

“If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints.”

The end time tribulation is going to really test the patience and faithfulness of believers (however much of the tribulation we end up going through.) I’m thankful that Revelation 13:8 makes it sound like believers will be protected from receiving the mark of the beast:

“All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast – all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.”

Prayer

“Lord, protect me. Keep me faithful. Grant me Your patience to endure whatever hardships You send my way. And, help me to have the wisdom to trust You in the midst of my trials, knowing that nothing is without a purpose and that You ‘work all things together for good.”

“He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man’s number. His number is 666.”

“Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil…” Psalm 141:3-4a

Application

It’s amazing how easily we are deceived, how quickly we worship the sensational: “The whole world was astonished and followed the beast.” Psalm 141 is perfect advice and wisdom for facing the end times: “My eyes are fixed on You, O Sovereign Lord; in You I take refuge!” If I consistently keep my eyes fixed on Jesus now, I won’t be distracted by things that glitter later.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to keep my gaze fixed upon You. Ground me in Your Word that I might always be able to discern between truth and deception.”

Observation

“Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return to Me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty.” Zechariah 1:3

“Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.” Revelation 12:12

Application

When God says, “Return to Me and I will return to you,” I don’t think that this suggests that He has abandoned us or has been unfaithful to us. I believe it has to do with our experience of God. When we wander from Him and go against His will, we feel distant from Him. But, it’s like the old saying: “If God seems distant, guess who moved?”

Revelation 12:12 intrigues me because it plainly states that Satan knows that his time is short to deceive and undermine God’s work; and, this makes him furious. On a positive note, this means that the endless evil of the world is more temporal than it often appears. The intensity of evil and sin which we experience today is indicative of Satan’s desperation.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to redeem the time – to make the most of it. Take away my desire to ever leave You, and any satisfaction that I might seem to derive from sin. Increase my appetite for You.”

Observation

“Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”
Haggai 1:5-6

“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign for ever and ever.” Revelation 11:15b

Application

Haggai 1:5-6 describes the futility, the vanity, of trying to live life and discover fulfillment apart from God. I’m especially convicted by the phrase: “You have planted much, but have harvested little.” This can only mean that the wrong things were planted, since God always oversees and blesses seeds which are sown in His name and for His glory. “Planting much, and harvesting little” has to do with self-serving, empty pursuits which are incapable of bearing lasting fruit.

I want to spend my life working toward the realization of this world becoming the kingdom of our Lord!

Prayer

“Lord, search me. Know my heart. Test my anxious thoughts. Reveal the things which offend You and displease You. And, lead me in Your everlasting way.”

Observation

Nineveh’s arrogant claim in Zephaniah 2:15, “I am, and there is none besides me,” is the exact same boastful mentality that led to Babylon’s destruction in Daniel.

Later, God says in Zephaniah 3:12, “But I will leave within you the meek and humble, who trust in the name of the Lord.”

“The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17

“The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; Your love, O Lord, endures forever – do not abandon the works of Your hands.” Psalm 138:8

Application

Today’s reading is the fulfillment of many verses which I’ve read over the last week about how God deposes the proud but gives grace and blessing to the humble.

It’s encouraging that God will fulfill His purpose in me. This reminds me of Philippians 1:6, “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you, will bring it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” I need to trust God from start to finish. He always has a plan and purpose.

Prayer

“Lord, I’m awestruck by the fact that You ‘delight’ in me and rejoice over me with singing. It’s exciting and humbling to be the object of Your overwhelming love.”

Observation

“Look at the nations and watch – and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe even if you were told.” Habakkuk 1:5

“Of what value is an idol, since a man has carved it? Or an image that teaches lies? For he who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak.” Habakkuk 2:18

“Lord, I have heard of Your fame; I stand in awe of Your deeds, O Lord. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.” Habakkuk 3:2

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.” Habakkuk 3:17-18

Application

I have heard so many people quote Habakkuk 1:5 over the years, asking God to do something amazing in our time, ignoring the fact that the “amazing thing” God did (in the context of Hab. 1:5) was to use a foreign nation (Babylon) to discipline His people. Oh! Now that doesn’t sound so good! Maybe I won’t hang that verse on the fridge!

Habakkuk 3:17-18 doesn’t fully “hit home” for most of us with the images which are mentioned. But, allow me to translate it into modern English:

“Though the stock market looks ‘bearish’ and there are no jobs to be had, though commodities have tanked and crops are dying to frost, disease and the economy in general, though there is no money left in checking or savings, YET I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.”

Does that strike a more familiar chord? It does for me.

Prayer

“Lord, I do stand in awe of Your miraculous works. Please renew them in our day. You know what I/we need. Have Your way! Be sovereign! I will find joy in You alone, my God and Savior.”

Nahum 1:1:3:19; Revelation 8:1-13; Psalm 136:1-26; Proverbs 30:7-9

Observation

Twenty-six times (once in each verse) the psalmist repeats the line, “His love endures forever,” in Psalm 136. These verses describe both God’s blessing and His judgment. But, still the response is: “His love endures forever.” God’s love is more than emotional, more than a warm fuzzy - it’s an extension of His character, His righteousness.

“…give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord? Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.”
Proverbs 30:8-9

Application

To say that God’s love endures forever is to affirm that His justice prevails from generation to generation. The task of parents and leaders is to continually highlight this enduring love, and remind people of God’s faithfulness.

Striking a balance between poverty and riches is no small feat. Abundance can breed complacency and self-sufficiency, while want can lead to envy and discontent. Peace comes from trusting God – believing that He knows our need and will supply it.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to be content rather than complacent. Help me to be diligent to know when and how to play my part, and when to back-off and rest in You. Thank You for personally validating that “Your love endures forever” in my life over the last 44 years.”

Observation

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times. …He will stand and shepherd His flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord His God. And they will live securely, for then His greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. And He will be their peace.” Micah 5:2, 4

“He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

“But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.” Micah 7:7

“…and He who sits on the throne will spread His tent over them. Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst… For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; He will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Application

God is our Shepherd. He is our peace. He is the One who gives us true security. I need to live according to His rules and not mine. I need to demonstrate mercy and to live in humility. God alone is my hope; and, I need to patiently wait upon His will and His timing.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to trust You, to wait upon You, and to rest in Your sovereignty. Thank You that a day is soon coming when You will wipe away every tear.”

Many nations will come and say, ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us His ways, to that we may walk in His paths.’ The law will go out from Zion, the Word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” Micah 4:1-2

Application

In the last days not only will God’s house (the temple) be reestablished, but it will also draw people from all nations who will come to seek the Lord’s counsel. As people get desperate for a religion/God that works, they will gravitate to the One true God, who alone has the power to answer prayer.

Prayer

“Lord, thank You that You see the beginning from the end. Nothing takes You by surprise. Nothing ruins Your plans and purposes. You hold the future in the palm of Your hand.”

Observation

It’s interesting that not only was Jonah in the belly of the whale for three days (as Christ was in the tomb three days), but Jonah also fell asleep in a boat in the midst of a violent storm.

I’m struck by the Ninevites repentance. They believed God, declared a fast, and the greatest to the least sought God for forgiveness.

“Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.”
Jonah 2:8

“But the Lord said, ‘You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city? Jonah 4:10-11

Once again, the fact that the Lamb (as well as God the Father “who sits on the throne”) is worshipped points to the fact that Jesus is God, since God never tolerates worship of anyone other than Himself (God).

“Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the Lord that man gets justice.” Proverbs 29:26

Application

So often I’m concerned about the wrong things, insignificant things, like Jonah. I’m thankful that God is always concerned about the things which matter, and that no one is insignificant in His eyes. “120,000 people who cannot tell their right hand from their left” is thought to be referring to children.

Prayer

“Lord, You are the audience that I seek. Thank You for taking notice of me and caring for every detail of my life. Thank You for showing me in so many ways lately that You care about even the small things in my life.”

Obadiah 1:1-21; Revelation 4:1-11; Psalm 132:1-18; Proverbs 29:24-25

Observation

I’m fascinated by today’s reading in Revelation 4. The four living creatures hover around the throne saying,

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”

Then, the text says that whenever the four living creatures do this, the twenty-four elders fall down and before “Him who sits on the throne, and worship Him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: ‘You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being.” Revelation 4:8-11

This is particularly exciting in light of what we know from a couple of other verses in the NT:

“In these last days (He) has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.” Hebrews 1:2

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:15-17

My point is that these verses, coupled with the verses in Revelation, clearly demonstrate that Jesus is God. God created the universe; and, Scripture says that Jesus created everything; therefore, Jesus is God!

We never get a really clear picture of Jesus (the Lamb that was slain) and God the Father in Revelation – in terms of where they are in relation to each other. Some verses make it sound like God the Father is on the throne, others like the Lamb is on the throne. But, both are worshipped and both are God.

Application

I’m just excited about the depth and reliability of Scripture. You can probe it, study it, test it… and it is never found insufficient or inaccurate. God’s Word is Truth and it continually stands up against the tests of time. God’s Word is living and active. Through It I not only grow in my knowledge of God, but also in the intimacy of my relationship with Him.

“Lord, Oh, the depth of the riches, both of Your wisdom and knowledge! How unsearchable are Your judgments and unfathomable Your ways! For who has known Your mind, or who became Your counselor? Or who has first given to You that it might be paid back again? For from You and through You and to You are all things. To You be the glory forever. Amen.”

Observation

“Since you have kept My command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth.” Revelation 3:10

“You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”
Revelation 3:17-20

Application

God’s keeping power in Revelation 3:10 does not necessarily refer to deliverance, as in the rapture. It can also describe His power to protect us in the midst of tribulation and suffering. And His invitation in 3:20 is much more than an offer of salvation. It’s a lifelong invitation of intimacy and fellowship with our Creator and Heavenly Father.

“Lord, thank You for life, protection, family and all of Your blessings. Thank You for initiating a relationship with me, and for loving me unconditionally.”

“I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. Even though you bring Me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. Away with the noise of your songs!” Amos 5:21

“…Then all the churches will know that I am He who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.”
Revelation 2:23

“I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.” Revelation 3:1b-2

“If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I put my hope. …O Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with Him is full redemption.”

Application

Revelation 3 is powerful: “I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die…” God is not interested in worldly reputations. He desires people who support their reputation with good deeds. I am to strengthen what remains before it dies. I can either take this as condemnation or as an offer of hope and change. Sometimes returning to our “first love” involves stoking the fire, and rekindling the flame.

Prayer

“Lord, thank You that You don’t keep a record of sins and that Your shed blood covers all sin. You are my hope. Your unfailing love keeps me going.”

“Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.” Revelation 2:10

“Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” Proverbs 29:20

Application

When I forget my first love, the best way to get back on track is to repent and do the things I did when I first came to faith in Christ. Perspective comes from remembering the place we used to be and realizing how far we have drifted or fallen.

You’ve got to love a warning that begins with: “Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer!” As much as I want to avoid suffering, I need to remember that it is part of God’s refining process in my life. And, He is faithful to protect me and give me strength even in the midst of adversity.

Prayer

“Lord, grant me the strength and focus to keep You first, every moment of every day. Help me not to settle for lesser things.”

“I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.” Joel 2:30-31

“I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And …I …saw …someone ‘like a son of man,’ dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

Application

God has the power to restore the years that the locust have eaten if I trust Him and let Him.

Joel 2:30-31 was recently brought to life for me in the movie, The Star Of Bethlehem. I highly recommend it. The intricacy of God’s plan never ceases to amaze me; and, the practical outcome of this is more evidence which speaks to the validity of the Bible.

Revelation 1:12-18 is an account of John’s encounter with Christ. But, the description sounds a lot like God. Wait! Maybe Jesus is God! This passage makes me want to live more fully surrendered to the Lord and His Word as I await this incredible day!

“Lord, come quickly! And, help me to do my part in spreading the Gospel and leading others to You before You come.”

“…Contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.” Jude 1:3b-4

“Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.” Jude 1:21
“Be merciful to those who doubt; snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy mixed with fear – hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.”

Application

We reap evil and deception when we depend upon our own strength and knowledge. Sometimes I abuse God’s patience and mercy by wandering further from Him rather than using it as an opportunity to draw closer to Him.

I need to contend for the faith, my faith, and stand against those who twist the truth to their own benefit. I need to be merciful to/with those who struggle, yet ruthless with those who intentionally manipulate the truth (as well as people) for evil.

Prayer

“Lord, thank You for Your power to keep me from falling, for Your grace which allows me to stand before You – presentable, without fault and with great joy! You are the only God! The only Savior! To You alone be all glory, majesty, power and authority, now and forevermore!”

Application

I don’t believe there’s any greater joy or sense of fulfillment in life than knowing that your children know the Lord, love Him with all their heart, and follow Him in obedience. This is the greatest ministry, the highest calling, for fathers. What does it profit a man/father to gain ___________, yet lose his own daughter or son?

Prayer

“Lord, grant me the wisdom and discipline to continually take a spiritual inventory of my life, to be honest and objective, and to adjust my priorities accordingly. ”

“My people are being destroyed because they don’t know Me. Since you priests refuse to know Me, I refuse to recognize you as my priests. …(you) have exchanged the glory of God for the shame of idols. When the people bring their sin offerings, the priests (you) get fed. So (you) are glad when the people sin!” Hosea 4:6-8

“Wine has robbed my people of their understanding. They ask a piece of wood for advice! They think a stick can tell them the future! Longing after idols has made them foolish. They have played the prostitute, serving other gods and deserting their God.” Hosea 4:11-12

“Love means doing what God has commanded us…” 2 John 1:6

“Anyone who wanders away from this teaching has no relationship with God. But anyone who remains in the teaching of Christ has a relationship with both the Father and the Son.” 2 John 1:9

Application

Hosea 4:6-8 is the fulfillment of “Where there is no vision the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18) When priests/pastors don’t know the Lord, their people don’t as well. And, when we don’t know our Creator it leads to destruction.

The simplest, most practical way I can express my love to God is to obey His Word/commandments.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to know You more deeply with each passing day. May I never forget that faith means having a relationship with You. Help me to love You with my life and actions, and not merely pay lip service to You.”

Observation

Hosea 2:7-8a sounds a lot like the parable of the prodigal son:

“When she runs after her lovers, she won’t be able to catch them. She will search for them, but not find them. Then she will think, ‘I might as well return to my husband, for I was better off with him than I am now.’ She doesn’t realize it was I who gave her everything she has…”

“Loving God means keeping His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome.” 1 John 5:3

“All who believe in the Son of God know in their hearts that this testimony is true. Those who don’t believe this are actually calling God a liar because they don’t believe what God has testified about His Son. And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life.” 1 John 5:10-12

“All wicked actions are sin, but not every sin leads to death.” 1 John 5:17

“And we know that the Son of God has come, and He has given understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and He is eternal life.

Application

It’s one thing for me to obey God and keep His commandments. It’s another to do this without a reluctant spirit or a bad attitude. And, John says that this demonstrates the depth of my love for the Lord.

How often I forget that everything I have is from God. Every good and perfect gift is from above… (James 1:17)

It’s impossible to be in fellowship with God the Father unless we are in fellowship with God the Son.

Prayer

“Lord, thank You for Your relentless, compassionate love. Thank You for never giving up on me. Thank You for pursuing me when I wander, for loving me in the midst of my sin. Help me to live in Your presence, and never lose fellowship with You.”

Observation

“God showed us how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him. This is real love – not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and His love is brought to full expression in us.” 1 John 4:9-12

“And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the Day of Judgment, but we can face Him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels fear. …We love each other because He loved us first.

Application

What a thought: “When we love each other, God lives in us, and His love is brought to full expression in us!” Bring on the love! Not self-serving, conditional love, but God’s love. God is the model. He loved us first and demonstrated what love is all about. I just need to follow His example in Scripture, and allow Him to be fully seen in my life.

Prayer

“Lord, cause Your love to be perfected in me. May I stand before You one day with confidence because I’m “dressed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.”

Observation

“…but the people who know their God will display strength and take action.” Daniel 11:32b

“But whoever has the world’s goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.”
1 John 3:17-18

Application

In the last days, the people who know their God will not be deceived. They will display strength and take action. How do we know God except through His Word? This is why daily time in the Bible is so important. One person wrote, “Someday we will see face-to-face the One whom we have know heart-to-heart.” Knowing God is more than emotions. It also involves knowledge about Him which only comes through the Word.

Love is a verb. Love means taking action, meeting needs, demonstrating our faith through our actions.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to take action in Your name, to meet needs, to love as You would love, and to recognize deception when I see it.”

“As soon as I began to pray, an answer was given…” Daniel 9:23

“Then he continued, ‘Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.”
Daniel 10:12

“And now, dear children, continue in Him, so that when He appears we may be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming. …How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! …Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” 1 John 2:28, 3:1-3

“No one who lives in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen Him or known Him.” 1 John 3:6

“The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:8

“He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses.” Proverbs 28:27

Application

We never know the impact our prayers have. Daniel’s prayers were answered the minute he began to seek God. It’s interesting that Daniel 10 says that when Daniel set his mind to gain understanding and when he humbled himself, that’s when his words were heard. God desires that I be committed/resolved (surrendered) to His will.

1 John 3:6 is convicting. Sin and a true knowledge of God, a true relationship with Him, are incompatible. Sin should not be my normal practice. The longer I know God, the longer I walk with Him, the less sin should rule my behavior.

Prayer

“Lord, I love Daniel’s prayer in Daniel 9, and I echo it. Because of Your great mercy, please listen O Lord! O Lord, please forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For Your sake O my God, do not delay.”

Observation

“I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for several days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business. I was appalled by the vision; it was beyond understanding.” Daniel 8:27

“But if anyone obeys His Word, God’s love is truly made complete in Him. This is how we know we are in Him: Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.” 1 John 2:5-6

“I write to you, young men because you are strong, and the Word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.” 1 John 2:14

“The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.” 1 John 2:17

Application

What a thought that when we obey God’s Word, His love is made complete in us. The evidence of God’s love in my life is a mark of ownership, a sign that I am His. John continues in verse 14 to also connect “God’s Word living in us” with “overcoming the evil one.”

Prayer

“Lord, help me to live for things eternal – things that will last and endure. May I see Your love perfected in my life as I follow You.”

Observation

“But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.”
1 John 1:7

“I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands.” Psalm 119:176

Application

Walking in the light means walking in obedience to God’s truth. When I walk in the light, I have fellowship with others and cleansing from my sin. It’s hard to feel clean if I stay in the mud/darkness.

Prayer

“Lord, thank You for forgiveness. Help me to walk in the light more and more. Thank You for Your Word. Help me to listen to it and obey it.”

Daniel 6:1-28; 2 Peter 3:1-18; Psalm 119:129-152; Proverbs 28:21-22

Observation

As I read through Daniel I keep thinking that he must have been exhausted and frustrated having to prove himself to three different kings. Each time they discover his gifts and talents, and he is promoted to positions of leadership and privilege which he held previously. I can identify with yesterday’s reading when Daniel finally says to King Belshazzar, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else.” (5:17)

Daniel chapter 6 speaks to Daniel’s exceptional character and giftedness: “Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. …the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.” Daniel 6:3-4

“The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9

Application

I often wonder why God allows different things to happen in my life. Daniel’s story reminds me that it’s not always about the lessons we need to learn. Sometimes it’s about how God wants to use us in the lives of others. My mentality is: “God haven’t I learned this lesson.” But, God’s perspective is: “I’m allowing this or that in your life another time so that I might demonstrate my power and glory to others.”

God’s timing has nothing to do with forgetfulness, or stalling for time. It has everything to do with His redemptive plans and purposes. I should never abuse God’s patience and view it as acceptance of my sin.

Prayer

“Lord, please show us examples of Christian leaders like Daniel that You are allowing to excel in positions of influence in order that they might guide our nation and world back to You.”

Observation

“You have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven. …You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in His hand your life and all your ways.” Daniel 5:23

“You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.” Daniel 5:27

“They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity… If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.” 2 Peter 2:19-21

Application

I honor myself. I honor others. But, often I fail to honor the “God who holds my life and ways in His hands.” It’s all too easy for me to become deceived into thinking that I have orchestrated the blessings in my life, or that I have earned them.

Peter’s words are convicting to every Christian who has a conscience. Do we/I promise freedom to others, yet live a life which is enslaved to depravity? I sometimes sin as if grace were cheap. I need to view my disobedience as “turning my back” on God. That’s a mental image that quickly deflates the lure of sin and puts things in proper perspective!

Prayer

“Lord, may my knowledge of You and Your Word lead to increased holiness and purity in my life, rather than a false sense of security which mistakes knowledge for action. Help me not to intellectualize You to the point where You cease to be personal to me. Guard me from trading knowledge “of” You over against a relationship “with” You.”

Our reading started today with King Nebuchadnezzar proclaiming to all peoples and nations, men of every language, “the miraculous signs and wonders that the Most High God had performed for him.” (Daniel 4:2) But somehow along the way, things went to his head and by Daniel 4:28 he’s singing a different tune: “Is this not the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”

God’s response to this arrogance and self delusion is found in 4:26: “…your kingdom will be restored to you when you acknowledge that Heaven rules.”

“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. By these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” 2 Peter 1:3-4

Application

There seems to be a theme running through the Scripture passages of people trying to take credit for the work of God. I need to continually remember that God’s blessings in my life are the result of His goodness and grace and not anything which I have attained on my own merit or cleverness.

My knowledge of God helps me escape the corruption of the world as I learn how I can participate in His divine nature through the power of His Holy Spirit.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to experience all that You desire for me. May I not compromise and settle for lesser things which this world has to offer. Grant me wisdom to make wise choices.”

Observation

Daniel’s humility is amazing. He continually gave credit to God for his ability to interpret the visions of King Nebuchadnezzar: “No wise man, enchanter, magician, or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.”
Daniel 2:27-28a

Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego’s faith in God to deliver them, as well as their resolve to honor God even if He didn’t rescue them, is inspiring to say the least. It led King Nebuchadnezzar to acknowledge, “Not other god can save in this way!” Daniel 3:29

“If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 4:11

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

“To all perfection I see a limit; but Your commands are boundless.”
Psalm 119:96

Application

I need to give God a lot more credit for things than I do. I miss out on ministry opportunities when I attempt to seek my own glory.

I am humbled by the faith of S., M. & A. I need to trust God to be faithful to His promises. I need to rest in His sovereignty no matter how He chooses to act in the affairs of my life.

Observation

Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego were “from the royal family and the nobility – young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace.” Daniel 1:3-4

“What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among men.” Daniel 2:11

“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:15

“For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do…” 1 Peter 4:3

Application

Jesus is Immanuel, “God with us.” He is the only God, on record, in history, who lives among men. Therefore, it’s not only possible to know Him and have a relationship with Him; it’s also possible to know His will and seek His counsel.

Witnessing simply means to give people a reason for our hope. Do I display this hope?

Prayer

“Lord, help me to live in Your hope. Help others to see that You offer true hope – that You are in fact that hope.”

Application

I should not be surprised when people try and find fault with my life. But, my actions and behavior should honor God to such an extent that others will glorify Him and seek after Him. The best way to silence irrational criticism about our behavior is by living a life that defies earthly (human) explanation.

“Lord, help me to live a life that honors You and draws others to You.”

Application

I need to do a better job setting my hope upon the grace which will be revealed to me (which is being revealed to me), and not upon my present circumstances. The things which I craved in ignorance will no longer satisfy me now that I know the truth. The truth is they never did satisfy, but in my deception I didn’t know any better.

Prayer

“Lord, thank You for calling me out of darkness into Your wonderful light. Thank You for Your grace. Thank You for granting me privileges and blessings I don’t deserve.”

Application

I’ve been born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Do I consistently display this hope in my life and in my interactions with others? No. I need to allow the reality of this hope to transform my perspective and attitude more. I have an eternal inheritance reserved for me which is imperishable and protected by God’s power. How much better could things be? If that doesn’t bring hope, nothing will!

Prayer

“Lord, continually open my eyes that I might see You in Your Word. Strengthen me according to Your Word.”

Observation

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” James 5:16

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to Your Word. I seek You with all my heart; do not let me stray from Your commands. I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You.” Psalm 119:9-11

“I delight in Your decrees; I will not neglect Your Word.” Psalm 119:16

Application

James 5:16 is a great reminder of the power of intercessory prayer. We miss out on this power and healing when we fail to be vulnerable and honest with each other about our struggles.

The best antidote against sin is hiding God’s Word in our heart. If I consistently seek God with all my heart I won’t struggle as much or stray as often away from His will.

Prayer

“Lord, help me not to neglect Your Word. Thank You for giving me a guide to follow. Thank You for revealing Yourself to me through Your Word. Thank You for meeting me as I seek after You.”

Application

So often I make plans without consulting God. So often I presume upon tomorrow. I assume that life will continue to be as it has always been. I take things for granted. And, I develop an unconscious entitlement mentality with God. I need to thank Him for each breath, each new day, each opportunity and each relationship He blesses me with.

God holds me accountable to my knowledge of His Word. I cannot claim ignorance when I sin. I know better. “To whom much is given, much is required.” (Luke 12:48)

Prayer

“Lord, thank You for all of Your blessings. May I never become complacent with Your goodness. Help me to prayerfully order my day (Your day) and not run off on my own.”

Application

Unless I act upon my beliefs my faith is no different than that of the demons! That’s a pretty sobering wake-up call. When we are in sin, we are at enmity with God. When “God made Him (Christ) who knew no sin to become sin on our behalf that we might become the righteousness of God through Him;” (2 Cor. 5:21) then, we became God’s friends. I believe God is friends with those who take Him seriously, those who take Him at His Word.

Prayer

“Lord, please grow me in Your wisdom. May I be more considerate, submissive, merciful, impartial, sincere and peace-loving. May my life display the fruit of Your Spirit.”

Application

If I neglect to act upon my knowledge of God’s Word I deceive myself. Knowing God’s Word and doing God’s Word are two very different things. True religion involves meeting needs – meeting the needs of those who are powerless over their situation or circumstances. True religion is about making a difference in the world without becoming polluted by the world.

Prayer

“Lord God, help me to practice what I preach, to live-out the things which I know to be true. Thank You for Your patience and grace.”

Application

Ezekiel 36:32 reminded me of the verse in Romans which says,

“God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance…” Romans 2:4

In Ezekiel 36:32 God says, “I am not doing this for your sake…” I believe what is meant here is that God’s blessings are not reward for righteous living (which is how we often interpret them) but rather God’s mercy in giving us what we don’t deserve as He calls us back to obedience.

I wish there was a road or path to becoming “perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” which did not involve trial and suffering. I need to look at more of the trials in my life from a redemptive, purposeful viewpoint rather than from a punitive, senseless vantage point.

Prayer

“Lord God, thank You for each and every one of Your perfect gifts and blessings in my life – even the ones I miss. The ones which sometimes come wrapped inside a trial.”

Application

Those who shepherd God’s sheep are to do so just as God would. Spiritual shepherds must never forget that the sheep belong to God. The goal of shepherding is not to manipulate the sheep to meet the needs of the shepherd. The goal of shepherding is to feed the sheep, protect the sheep and to safely lead them to a determined destination.

“Lord God, thank You that You never change. You are faithful and trustworthy. Help me to bring glory to You every day.”

Application

I’m reminded that everything on earth is temporary as fires burn out of control across southern California. I forget that one day God will create a new heaven and a new earth. Sometimes I hold on too tightly to the things of this world. I need to focus on, and put my hope and trust in, the things which cannot be shaken – eternal things.

Prayer

“Lord God, would you please intervene with these devastating fires. Would you please draw alongside of individuals and families in a healing, comforting way. Please mend hearts and provide strength and resources for lives to be rebuilt. I pray that Your children would also rise to this challenge and be Your hands and feet on earth.”

Application

When we place our confidence in anyone or anything other than God, we live to regret it. It becomes a painful reminder of our sin.

Fixing my eyes upon Jesus not only helps me to run the race of faith well, it also keeps me from losing heart and growing weary. I’m reminded of Isaiah 40:28-31.

God’s discipline prepares me to share in His holiness. If I would only see discipline in this light rather than as punishment or as a sign of abandonment.

We need to live in relationship with one another and guard Christian community because we help to challenge and sharpen one another.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to run with endurance. I get so easily discouraged and side-tracked. Help me to stay on course, complete the race, and honor You in the process.”

You were in Eden, the garden of God… Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings.” Ezekiel 28:11-13a, 17

“By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, ‘It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.’ Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death.”

Application

Most understand the Ezekiel 28:11ff. passage to be describing more than a human. It best fits Satan, as the one who motivated the king of Tyre and who was also in the Garden of Eden. Satan’s heart became proud because of his beauty, and as a result he used his wisdom for corruption. This sounds like a description of people throughout the generations who have allowed power, fame and influence to go to their head.

I am struck by the enormity of Abraham’s obedience in being willing to sacrifice his only son. On one hand, he knew God’s promise would be fulfilled through his son. But, so great was his trust in God that He was willing to take away his only hope of realizing this promise, believing that God still had an inalterable plan.

Prayer

“Lord, I pray that You would grow a faith in me that trusts You despite circumstances which might call into question Your faithfulness. Thank You that nothing in heaven or earth is able to render You powerless. Nothing is able to hinder Your plans.”

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

“He (Abraham) considered Him faithful who had made the promise.”

“All these people (exhaustive list of chapter 11) were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. Application

Hope translates into certainty and conviction. Hope means that the invisible, intangible things which God has promised are more certain and sure than anything we experience in this physical world. Hope assures us that “reality” is so much bigger than what we see, touch, smell, hear and taste. God’s reality is not limited by our human inability to perceive it.

Prayer

“Lord, I believe in a land, a country, that is infinitely superior to my present experience. I believe that You are faithful to keep all of Your promises. And, I believe that You will become my ever-increasing reward as I seek You.”

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:23-25

“So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.” Hebrews 10:35-36

“We are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.” Hebrews 10:39

Application

Our encouragement and motivation to hold on strong to our faith is because our Lord is faithful. He will not change. He will remain true to His Word, fulfilling every promise. One way which we hold to the hope of our profession is by stimulating each other to love and good deeds, fellowshipping together, with greater intensity and frequency as we anticipate Christ’s return.

Sometimes I’m tempted to throw away my confidence. But, following God’s will leads to a rich reward – the attainment of all He has promised.

True believers don’t shrink back from faith, obedience and salvation, because “greater is He that is in them than he that is in the world.”

Prayer

“Lord, may I never stop anticipating Your return. May I not get so caught-up in this life that I start living and acting like ‘this is it.”

Application

God is still looking for men and women today who will build rather than tear down, people who will stand in the gap on behalf of their land and on behalf of truth and justice.

Only Jesus can make us perfect. He is reality and not merely a shadow. What keeps me from consistently drawing near to Him in worship?

Application

Sometimes people receive the message which God gives us as if it were a myth – merely a story. It’s difficult to relate the truths of Scripture with those who view God’s Word as simply optional advice.

Yesterday’s reading in Hebrews 9:9 told us that the old sacrificial system was unable to “clear the conscience of the worshiper.” Today we read in Hebrews 9:14 that the blood of Christ is able to cleanse our consciences “so that we may serve the living God.” The purpose of a clean/clear conscience is not so we can indulge deeper in sin with no remorse, but rather that we might serve the living God!

Christ is superior to the earthly high priests because: 1. He never needs to be replaced since He lives forever to eternally intercede for us. 2. His sacrifice is perfect. 3. His sacrifice is Himself and not an animal. 4. His sacrifice is “once-for-all” and never needs to be repeated. 5. He intercedes for us in God’s very presence rather than in a man-made structure. 6. His sacrifice cleanses our conscience.

Prayer

“Lord, I am waiting for You to bring Your promised salvation. How awesome it will be to be forever in Your presence – never to be separated.”

“Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!” Ezekiel 18:31-32

“This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper.” Hebrews 9:9

“Many times He delivered them, but they were bent on rebellion and they wasted away in their sin. But He took note of their distress when He heard their cry; for their sake He remembered His covenant and out of His great love He relented.” Psalm 106:43-45

Application

God takes no pleasure in punishing us. Rather, He desires our obedience so that He might bless us. I need to rid myself of sin and get a new heart and spirit. And yet, I can’t get a new heart and spirit without God’s help.

The old sacrificial system never fully dealt with sin. It covered it up temporarily, like sweeping something under a carpet. Yet, it never “cleared the conscience of the worshiper.” Our conscience always knew that the sin was still under the carpet. Only Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross can clear my conscience of guilt forevermore.

Prayer

“Lord, help me not to be ‘bent on rebellion.’ Grant me Your heart and Your Spirit that I might be ‘bent’ on obedience.”

Observation

“But they soon forgot what He had done and did not wait for His counsel. In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wasteland they put God to the test.” Psalms 106:13-14

Application

How quickly I forget God and all that He has done in my life. Instead of waiting for His counsel I rush ahead with my own plans. I give in to my cravings. And, I constantly put God to the test as I wander through spiritual wastelands.

What’s the solution? First, I need to remember God in all that I do, in every moment of my life. Second, I must wait upon Him for His perfect timing and for His will to be done. I cannot second-guess Him, or become impatient when His timing does not match mine (it rarely does!) I need to resist the cravings of my sinful flesh which put my agenda and ambitions ahead of God’s. Finally, I need to stop putting God to the test by abusing His grace and presuming upon “forgiveness-on-demand.”

Prayer

“Lord, how often I wander through wastelands – places that are dry and dead, devoid of You and outside of Your will. Draw me to Yourself. Satisfy my cravings in You.”

“…a better hope is introduced by which we draw near to God. …Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant. …because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood. Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them.” Hebrews 7:19, 22, 24-25

“Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.” Proverbs 27:5-6

Application

Sin is taking our gifts and blessings and using them to promote our agenda rather than God’s. Indulging in sin does not lead to satisfaction; it only leads to a greater appetite – an insatiable appetite which cannot be satisfied.

What a true picture of the price of sin in Ezekiel 16:34: giving payment while none is given to you. When we sin, we pay a price, and there is no remuneration – no recompense.

I like the NIV version of Hebrews 7:25 because it stresses the totality of salvation: “He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him (Jesus)…” Salvation is past, present and future: justification, sanctification and glorification. The application that I draw from this is that I never stop needing Christ as my Savior!

Friends tell us what we may not want to hear, yet need to hear. Friends have the relational clout to be brutally honest with us. They have earned our trust. They have proven that they love us and have our best interests in mind. Enemies have to fake love and concern by multiplying kisses.

Prayer

“Jesus, thank You for saving me every minute of every day! I’m reminded of the words of the old hymn: ‘I need Thee, O I need Thee. Every hour I need Thee. O bless me now my Savior. I come to Thee.”

Application

So many people today claim to have a word from the Lord. They carelessly toss this phrase around circles like a verbal trump card. Who’s going to argue with a word from the Lord? Who am I to say that God did not tell you this or that? Yet, the validity of the vision or word from the Lord is whether or not it is fulfilled. If not, then it’s just misguided thoughts or worse yet – a lie.

How awesome to have a high priest who holds His office/role on the basis of “the power of an indestructible life!” We have been granted “indestructible life” from this high priest through His resurrection from the dead!

Prayer

“Jesus, thank You for the gift of life – indestructible life! Help me to live this life, use this life, for You!”

Application

It’s impossible for me to feel remorse for my sin and turn from it if I treat repentance and forgiveness like rights of entitlement, and if I act like sin doesn’t leave scar tissue.

Proverbs 27:1 reminds me of James 4:13ff. I need to trust God with my future and plans and not presume anything.

Application

Contagious Christianity caused me to look at Ezekiel 3:18 from an evangelistic perspective for the first time. I am accountable for what I do with opportunities to “dissuade” someone from their sinful ways, for attempts I make (or fail to make) to save a life.

Unless we combine the gospel with faith and action, it is of little value. Entering God’s rest is not about works; but, it is about owning and personalizing the “work” which has already been accomplished on our behalf. And, we “own” and “personalize” our faith by surrendering our life to God’s truth (not merely intellectually assenting) and allowing this truth to transform our character and behavior.

Prayer

“Lord, I know I need to approach Your throne with boldness and confidence – with greater frequency. I need Your grace and help. May I not allow my sin to keep me from coming to You for help.”

Application

I wish I could keep the image of Ezekiel 1:26-28 burned in my mind in such a way that I would daily guard myself against the temptation to worship lesser things. Someday when I stand before God’s throne I’ll wonder how I ever found anything else beautiful, attractive, or enticing.

Ezekiel 3:7 is a good reminder that our failure to carry out the message of God’s servants is ultimately an act of disobedience against God Himself.

Ezekiel 3:15 underscores the reality that sometimes the awesomeness of what God reveals to us and teaches us, coupled with the enormity of the task that lies before us, leaves us feeling overwhelmed. In times like this sometimes we just need to rest and collect our thoughts as we prepare for the ministry ahead.

The only way which we guard ourselves against “a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God” is by daily responding to the conviction and challenge of God’s Word, and by daily encouraging one another to ‘stay the course.’

Prayer

“Lord, daily remind me of the glory to come, of Your beauty and awesomeness. May I be consumed with You. May I daily respond to You in obedience and love.”

Application

It’s easy to drift away from God when we don’t pay close attention to what we’ve been taught. This drift begins when our actions don’t match our convictions and beliefs.

God often confirms the truth of His Word and the truth of the gospel with signs and wonders.

“Lord, thank You for Your compassion and mercy. Thank You for satisfying my desires with good things. Help me to seek after those ‘good things’ and not to substitute lesser things.”

Application

I say that the Lord is my portion, but then many times I rely upon other things for comfort, satisfaction and security. I prove that God is my all-in-all by waiting upon Him – for His answers in His timing.
God never tolerates worship of anyone or anything other than Himself. Yet, He commands His angels to worship the Son. Could this mean that Jesus is God?!

Gossip is so appealing, so enticing – it tastes so good, and even seems to satisfy our appetite. But, the after taste, the upset stomach that follows is proof of its destructive nature.

Prayer

“Lord, help me not to be impatient over the unresolved issues in my life. Help me to wait for Your answers, rather than my ‘quick fixes’ which invariably fail. Help me to also wait for Your perfect timing, rather than the timing which seems to make sense from my limited, human perspective.”

Application

Philemon 1:6 can be translated two different ways: either that as we share our faith we become more aware of our blessings in Christ (“every good thing we have in Christ”), or that as we become more aware of every good thing we have in Christ it will motivate and inspire us to share our faith more. Whichever the case is, the application is both obvious and exciting.

If we understood gossip as a raging, destructive fire (which it is) perhaps we would all make more of an effort to eliminate it from our lives. Maybe we should start referring to each other as “verbal arsonists!” That might help to keep us in touch with the severity of gossip.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to share my faith, my experience with You. May my evangelistic efforts be both fueled and enhanced by Your goodness in my life.”

Jehoiachin’s experience of mercy at the hands of Babylonian King Evil-Merodach in Jeremiah 52:33 sounds a lot like what God has done for us,

“So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king’s table.”

“When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy.”
Titus 3:4-5a
Application

Too often I take off my prison clothes, eat at the King’s table, and then return to putting my prison clothes back on again. God finds me dumpster-diving (living in sin, trying to provide for myself); and, He cleans me up, prepares a meal for me, dines and fellowships with me, and offers me unlimited access to Him. Yet, it’s not long until I’m back in the dumpster again. God’s kindness has appeared to me in the person of Jesus Christ. I need to daily live in His presence and feast at His table – no more attempts at self-preservation.

Prayer

“Lord, it’s Your kindness that leads me to repentance (Rom. 2:4). Help me not to presume on the riches of Your mercy and patience. May I do something with the treasure You’ve entrusted to me.”

“We are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed.” Titus 2:12-13

“Interfering in someone else’s argument is as foolish as yanking a dog’s ears.”
Application

My actions should reflect the integrity and seriousness of my teaching. They should be consistent with the truth of Scripture. If I do this, people will have nothing negative to say about Christ, His followers or me.

“Lord, once again help me to live with anticipation and eagerness as I look forward to Your return. And, may the hope and assurance of this blessed reality transform my thoughts and actions.”

“An elder must live a blameless life. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or dishonest with money. Rather, he must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must love what is good. He must live wisely and be just. He must live a devout and disciplined life.” Titus 1:7-8

“Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted. Such people claim they know God, but they deny Him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.” Titus 1:15-16

Application

Beyond living a blameless life, an elder must love people, love what is good, live wisely, and be disciplined. Not one of us is perfect, but this list of characteristics is our standard. And, the point of living life in this way is not to draw attention to ourselves and say, “Hey, look at me! I’m next to perfect!” The goal of living in this manner is so that Christ might be more visible in us and through us – because there’s less of us that gets in the way.

Titus 1:16 teaches us that if our mind and actions always gravitate toward what is impure, corrupt and dishonorable, then although we might claim to know God, we deny Him by the way we live. Wow! There’s a heavy dose of practical and convicting truth! No matter what we claim or think, our actions tell the real story.

Prayer

“Lord, help my walk to match my talk. I want to honor You with my life. I want to enjoy the joy and fulfillment in life that You intended for me to experience. And, I want others to see You in my life.”

Application

God’s Word is appropriate and helpful in any situation, at any time. We live in a time where people flock to hear “health, wealth & prosperity” messages – not what they need, but what they want to hear. The challenge is to continue to faithfully preach the Word (in its entirety), whether it’s received or not.
I long to finish the race, to come to the end of my life, and be able to say, “I have remained faithful.” I don’t live “longing for His appearing” like I should either. I get too caught-up in my day to day routine. I need to remind myself what really matters – what’s eternal and what’s temporary.

Hiring an employee or team member should be a purposeful, intentional choice, and not a random selection.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to anticipate Your coming with excitement and longing the same way I look forward to petty activities and events of this life. Help me to remember that Your coming will far surpass anything I have ever experienced, anything I can even imagine.”

Observation

“Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.” 2 Timothy 2:25-26

“…in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. …They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!”
2 Timothy 3:1-2, 5

“Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” 2 Timothy 3:12

“How long, O Lord? How long will the wicked be allowed to gloat? …They crush Your people, Lord, hurting those You claim as Your own. ‘…The Lord isn’t looking,’ they say, ‘and besides, the God of Israel doesn’t care.’ Think again, you fools! When will you finally catch on? Is He deaf—the One who made your ears? Is He blind—the One who formed your eyes? He punishes the nations—won’t He also punish you? He knows everything—doesn’t He also know what you are doing?” Psalm 94:3, 5, 7-10

“When doubts filled my mind, Your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.” Psalm 94:19

Application

Gentle instruction rather than pushy obnoxiousness softens the hearts of those who oppose the truth. It helps to point out to unbelievers that they are not really free; they are held captive to fulfill Satan’s desires, not theirs.

It sounds like we’re in the last days by the description found in 2 Timothy 3:1-5. I’m convicted by the question, “Am I someone who acts religious, but rejects the power which is able to make me godly?”

Prayer

“Lord, when will I catch on? You do see all, and You require more of me, more from me, than the scraps of obedience which I bring to the altar.”

Observation

“You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.” 2 Timothy 2:2

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a workman who need not be ashamed, handling accurately the Word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

“But God’s truth stands firm like a foundation stone with this inscription: ‘The Lord knows those who are His.’ And ‘All who belong to the Lord must turn away from evil.” 2 Timothy 2:19

“If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.” 2 Timothy 2:21

“Your throne, O Lord, has stood from time immemorial. You yourself are from the everlasting past. The floods have risen up, O Lord. The floods have roared like thunder; the floods have lifted their pounding waves. But mightier than the violent raging of the seas, mightier than the breakers on the shore—the Lord above is mightier than these!”

“Don’t answer the foolish arguments of fools, or you will become as foolish as they are.” Proverbs 26:4

Application

Discipleship involves handing off the baton of faith to people who will be reliable to hand it off to other people. There’s nothing more frustrating than running a relay race, and having someone on your team blow it on their leg.

Being diligent to present ourselves approved to God as students and teachers of His Word is a lifelong assignment – and hopefully a lifelong passion.

2 Timothy 2:21 makes a connection between purity and usefulness, between purity and readiness for the opportunities that come our way to be used of God.

Prayer

“Lord, purify me for Your service. Refine my heart of the dross that displeases You and is not worthy of You.”

Observation

“He (King Nebuchadnezzar) made Zedekiah watch as they slaughtered his sons and all the nobles of Judah. Then they gouged out Zedekiah’s eyes, bound him in bronze chains, and led him away to Babylon.” Jeremiah 39:6-7

I’m guessing that Zedekiah did not surrender as Jeremiah warned him. Fleeing is not the same as surrendering. This could have been Zedekiah’s fate:

“You won’t be handed over to them if you choose to obey the Lord. Your life will be spared, and all will go well for you. But if you refuse to surrender…” Jeremiah 38:20-21a

“I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you.” 2 Timothy 1:5

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7

“…Christ Jesus, our Savior …broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News.” 2 Timothy 1:10

“I know the One in whom I trust, and I am sure that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until the day of His return.” 2 Timothy 1:12b

“Satisfy us each morning with Your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery! Replace the evil years with good.” Psalm 90:14-15

Application

Obedience always leads to a better outcome than when we make decisions on our own, based on fear.

Faith is a generational passing of the baton. May we be faithful to raise up a future generation that loves God, honors Him and carries forward the legacy of His faithfulness.

I’m claiming 2 Timothy 1:7 as it relates to evangelistic opportunities which God gives to me, and my response to them.

Prayer

“Lord, would You satisfy me each morning with Your unfailing love, so I might sing for joy for the rest of my life.”

Jeremiah 37:1-38:28; 1 Timothy 6:1-21; Psalm 89:38-52; Proverbs 25:28

Observation

Jeremiah was persecuted in Jeremiah 38 simply for being faithful to “truthfully” proclaim God’s Word, rather than to tell people what they want to hear. He was accused of “discouraging the soldiers” and “not seeking the good of the people, but rather their ruin.” But, sometimes truth is discouraging. Discouraging truth that leads to our well being is much better than encouraging lies that set a trap for our destruction. Jeremiah was faithful to God, and yet he ended up in a smelly, muddy pit (cistern).

Jeremiah’s bitter sarcasm in 38:15 is understandable,

“Promise you won’t kill me if I give you a truthful answer; because I’m not motivated to give you counsel at all since you never listen anyway.”

I was struck by the phrasing of 1 Timothy 6:5,

“…men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the Truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.”

“But, godliness with contentment is great gain.” 1 Timothy 6:6

“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” 1 Timothy 6:12

“Don’t be arrogant and don’t put your hope in wealth, which is so uncertain (stock market, economy!). But, put your hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. …Do good, be rich in good deeds, be generous and willing to share. In this way you will lay up treasure for yourselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that you may take hold of the life that is truly life.” 1 Timothy 6:17-19

(I took the liberty of changing the pronouns from 3rd person to 2nd person to personalize Paul’s command as also applying to us and not just a group of Jews 2,000 years ago.)

“Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.” Proverbs 25:28

Application

Sometimes I interpret trials and tough times as a sign that God is frustrated with me or that I am out of His will. Yet, Jeremiah ended up in a pit (no fault or sin of his own). Again, I’m reminded of Philippians 1:29,

“For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake.”

How am I taking hold of the eternal life to which I have been called? In part, I believe it involves a fight – fighting the good fight: living without compromise, living obediently. Again, in verse 19 Paul says, “Take hold of the life that is truly life.”

When I lose my self-control in any area of my life, I am like a city without walls – vulnerable to attack and seizure.

Prayer

“Lord, I don’t want to merely ‘seize the day,’ I want to seize life – ‘the life that is truly life!’ Please help me not to settle for lesser things. Guard me against selling out for immediate gratification rather than the rewards which come through faithful obedience to You.”

Observation

“Jonadab son of Recab ordered his sons not to drink wine and this command has been kept. …But I (the Lord) have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not obeyed Me.” Jeremiah 35:14

Problem:
“Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about every disaster I plan to inflict on them, each of them will turn from is wicked way; then I will forgive their wickedness and their sin.” Jeremiah 36:3

Response:
“Whenever Jehudi had read three or four columns of the scroll, the king cut them off with a scribe’s knife and threw them into the firepot, until the entire scroll was burned in the fire. The king and all his attendants who heard all these words showed no fear, nor did they tear their clothes.”
Jeremiah 36:23-24

Result:
“I will punish him (King Jehoiakim of Judah) and his children and his attendants for their wickedness; I will bring on them and those living in Jerusalem and the people of Judah every disaster I pronounced against them, because they have not listened.” Jeremiah 36:31

“The sins of some men are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not cannot be hidden.” 1 Timothy 5:24-25

“I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging; but I will not take My love from them, nor will I ever betray My faithfulness.”
Psalm 89:32-33

“Like a muddied spring or a polluted well is a righteous man who gives way to the wicked. It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honorable to seek one’s own honor.” Proverbs 25:26-27

Application

What a tragedy when we are better at following “earthly” orders than “heavenly” commands.

God wants so desperately to forgive our wickedness. He stalls punishment, hoping that we will repent and change. Jeremiah 36 is a good example of the costliness of bad leadership. The people wanted to respond to God, but the leadership was unrepentant and therefore incurred judgment on everyone! There is a huge responsibility that goes with leading. Good leadership can lead to a tremendous outcome; bad leadership can produce devastating consequences. This reminds me of yesterday’s verse:

“Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.” 1 Timothy 4:16

Finally, I thought that Psalm 89 was such a beautiful picture of the balance between God’s justice and love. He punishes us (for our good – and with redemption in mind) and yet He never takes away His love or betrays His faithfulness. This makes me want to be more faithful and obedient to my Savior and Lord!

Prayer

“Lord, help me to be a wise leader. Help me to honor You, to faithfully follow You, and to lead others to You.”

Observation

“This is what the Lord says, He who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it – the Lord is His name: ‘Call to Me and I will answer you tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:2-3

This verse reminds me of Romans 11:33,

“Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!”

“The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.” 1 Timothy 4:1

“…Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:7b-8

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. …Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”
1 Timothy 4:12-13, 16

Application

What an awesome promise that as I pursue God He will share “great and unsearchable things” which I do not know.

An investment in godliness is an eternal investment!

Paying close attention to how we live our life and what we believe is not just a personal safeguard, but it also provides protection and benefit to those who listen to us and follow our example.

Prayer

“Lord, grant me the wisdom and desire to pursue You everyday – not in an obligatory, mechanical manner, but passionately and wholeheartedly.”

Observation

“The time is coming,” declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying,‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” Jeremiah 31:31-34

“If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.” Proverbs 25:21-22

Application

God has put His law in our minds and has written it upon our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Not only is God’s law internal rather than external, but we also have the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit to obey God’s law.

Proverbs 25:21-22 is quoted by Paul in Romans 12:20. Many times people interpret “heaping burning coals” on an enemy’s head as an act of revenge. But, in ancient times a person’s fire would go out and they would need to borrow some live coals to restart their fire. This was no easy task since burning coals were usually found only outside the city gates where perpetual fires would burn. People would transport the coals from these fires to their home by carrying them in baskets upon their head. Making that trip for a neighbor (not to mention an enemy) was seen as an extreme act of kindness.

I have to ask myself, “Have I gone the extra mile recently to show God’s kindness and love – especially to someone who may not be a friend?” I need to look for opportunities.

Prayer

“Lord, help me not to miss the opportunities You send my way each day to show others Your love. Help me to seize these moments and to respond as You would.”

Observation

“The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying, ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with lovingkindness.”
Jeremiah 31:3

“I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.” Jeremiah 31:13b

“I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.” Jeremiah 31:25

“…God our Savior…wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men…”
1 Timothy 2:3-6

Application

What a deal: the opportunity to trade our sorrow for comfort and joy and our mourning for gladness. God offers refreshment to the weary and satisfaction to the faint. Our search is over. Who else offers us a promise like this?

In my opinion, 1 Timothy 2:3-6 is a strong argument against a view of election in which God pre-selects some and rejects others. Paul teaches that God “wants all men to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth,” and that He “gave Himself as a ransom for all men.” Not everyone responds to this offer; but the offer is still available to all people nonetheless.

“Lord, Thank You for loving me with an everlasting love, Your everlasting love. Thank You for continually, day-by-day ‘drawing’ me with Your lovingkindness.”

Jeremiah 28:1-29:32; 1 Timothy 1:1-20; Psalm 86:1-17; Proverbs 25:17

Observation

I frequently hear Jeremiah 29:11-13 quoted and claimed,

“For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

I never hear any mention of the previous verse (29:10),

“This is what the Lord says: ‘When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my gracious promise to bring you back to this place.”

My point? God’s blessings were preceded by 70 years of punishment and discipline.

“…instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines, nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith. But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion…” 1 Timothy 1:3-6

“But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on Him and receive eternal life.” 1 Timothy 1:16
“Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house – too much of you, and he will hate you.” Proverbs 25:17

Application

Sometimes we must endure the inevitable consequences of our sin before we can enjoy and experience God’s promised blessing. We need to remember that even God’s punishment is redemptive in nature. He uses everything to shape us and mold us into His image.

I thought Paul’s words in 1 Timothy 1:5 made a great philosophy of ministry statement for each one of us to live by:

“…the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.”

Paul’s comment in 1 Timothy 1:16 made me realize that God’s “unlimited patience” in my life, through my sinfulness and shortcomings, can be sovereignly used to draw others to salvation.

The message of Proverbs 25:17 is straight forward & humorous:

“Don’t overstay your welcome!”

Prayer

“Lord, energize me and equip me to love from a pure heart, and a good conscience and a sincere faith.”

Jeremiah 26:1-27:22; 2 Thessalonians 3:1-18; Psalm 85:1-13; Proverbs 25:16

Observation

“We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. …as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right.”
2 Thessalonians 3:11, 13

“If anyone does not obey our instructions in this letter…take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. Yet, do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.”
2 Thessalonians 3:14-15

Application

2 Thessalonians 3:11 is interesting in its phrasing: “those who are busybodies but not busy.” The point is that some people are busy but not in respect to accomplishing anything which is useful, productive or helpful for others. I can think of a few characters on television who fit this description! On the other hand, Paul encourages us,

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58

I also like 2 Thessalonians 3:13, “…never tire of doing good.” The Greek word for “tire” means “to become discouraged.” Often our weariness is not physical but rather emotional – we lose heart, lose hope.

Finally, what great advice in 2 Thessalonians 3:15 with respect to church discipline. We are to hold people accountable yet with brotherly love. Those who sin are not the enemy. We all sin. We are called to balance without erring on one extreme or the other: turning our head the other way and tolerating sin, or excommunicating people from the loving help they need.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to be productive in things that make a difference. Guard me from spinning my wheels in uselessness.”

Jeremiah 23:21-25:38; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-17; Psalm 84:1-12; Proverbs 25:15

Observation

Jeremiah’s words in 23:25-26, 30-31, 32 are not only a condemnation of the prophets of his day, but they also ring true as a biting commentary of some contemporary pastors,

“I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in My name. They say, ‘I had a dream! I had a dream!’ How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds? …Therefore, I am against the prophets who steal from one another words supposedly from Me. Yes, I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, ‘The Lord declares.’ …They do not benefit these people in the least,’ declares the Lord.”

“And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of His mouth and destroy by the splendor of His coming.” 2 Thessalonians 2:8

“…they perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.” 2 Thessalonians 2:10b-12

Application

As we enter into the end times it’s increasingly important for us to spend time in God’s Word so that we will be able to distinguish between truth and error. As Paul says (2 Thessalonians 2:9), the “lawless one” (the antichrist) will perform “all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders.” We live in a culture that seeks power, a touch of the miraculous (not unlike biblical times), and we need to be cautious that we don’t assume that someone is from God just because they perform extraordinary acts. Satan also gives power to his followers – power to deceive, confuse and destroy. And, God allows a “powerful delusion” to come upon those who refuse to believe the truth.

Prayer

“Lord, protect us from deception. May Your Word guide and guard our hearts and minds in Your truth.”

Observation

“Woe to shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of My pasture!’ declares the Lord. ‘…Because you have scattered My flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,’ declares the Lord. ‘I Myself will gather the remnant of My flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,’ declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 23:1, 2b-4

“We constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of His calling, and that by His power He may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

“Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of gifts he does not give.” Proverbs 25:14

Application

When shepherds neglect to care for their flock, the sheep are inevitably scattered. God appoints shepherds and God is able to remove and replace bad shepherds.

2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 could be used as one of those “name-it-&-claim it” passages: “We pray…that His power…may fulfill every good purpose of yours.” Fortunately, Paul follows-up on this verse with godly parameters: “That the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him.” Many of our good intentions and purposes don’t bring glory to God; and, this ultimately should be the goal and end result of answered prayer – that God receives the glory!

Observation

“He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with Him.” 1 Thessalonians 5:10

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. …Do not put out the Spirit’s fire. …Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16-19, 21-22

“Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” Psalm 82:3-4

Application

What security to know that our future has been secured by God. Nothing can ever separate us from God. This gives me great confidence and peace as I struggle through difficult and unstable times.

Perhaps Paul is saying in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 that the way to be “joyful always” and to “give thanks in all circumstances” is to stay connected with/to our life source by “praying continually.”

Prayer

“Lord, bless me with opportunities to make a difference in the lives of those who are poor and needy. Thank You for providing for me. May I be able to provide for others with what You have shared with me.”

Observation

Jeremiah 17:7-8 sounds a lot like Psalm 1,

“But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.”
Jeremiah 17:9-10

“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; …For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.”
1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, 7-8

“Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.”
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12

“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18

Application

Jeremiah 17:9-10 is a reminder that we can’t always trust our heart even though the world often says, “Just follow your heart!” All too often our heart cries out for things that are against God’s will.

Paul recommends living a quiet life, minding our own business, and working hard with our hands so that we are not a burden to others or overly dependent; and, so that we will be a strong witness to outsiders (unbelievers). Unfortunately, I know many Christians who are exactly the opposite: loud, in everyone else’s business, and always looking for someone else to pick up the tab. Paul identifies these factors as either assets or liabilities for sharing our faith.

Prayer

“Lord, create in me a clean heart and renew a right Spirit within me.”

Observation

“When Your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear Your name, O Lord God Almighty.” Jeremiah 15:16

“We thank God continually because, when you received the Word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the Word of God, which is at work in you who believe.”
1 Thessalonians 2:13

“For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when He comes? Is it not you? Indeed you are our glory and joy. …Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.”
1 Thessalonians 2:19-20; 3:7-8

Application

God’s Word becomes a joy to us when we internalize it, not when we merely admire it from a distance. Too often we treat God’s Word as the “word of men” rather than the “Word of God which is at work in (us) who believe!” It is God’s Word which empowers us to stand firm in the midst of persecution and to confidently look forward to Christ’s return.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to consume Your Word – not just to read it, study it, preach it, but to live it.”

Observation

“Why do the wicked prosper? Why do the faithless live at ease? …You are always on their lips but far from their hearts.” Jeremiah 12:1b, 2b

“…you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.”
1 Thessalonians 1:9

“We speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. …We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.”
1 Thessalonians 1:4, 8

Application

Too often God is on my lips but far from my heart – my walk doesn’t match my talk. I need to allow others to hold me accountable on this and give them permission to challenge me and ask hard questions.

Ministry is more than just sharing the gospel (huge part); it is also sharing of our lives. For me this means forming deep relationships with believers and unbelievers.

Prayer

“Lord, continue to give me opportunities to form relationships with those that need to know You, as well as with those that You choose to use to grow and develop me.”

Observation

I thought that Jeremiah 10:5 was amazing,

“Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good.”

“I know, O Lord, that a man’s life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps.” Jeremiah 10:23

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Colossians 4:2

“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:5-6

“Epaphras… is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.” Colossians 4:12

“And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.” Psalm 78:72

Application

We would never bow down and worship a scarecrow or consult it for decisions; but, it’s amazing how many worthless, lifeless things of this world we/I turn to for answers and satisfaction.

Jeremiah 10:23 reminds us that it is not for us “to direct our steps.” This reminds me of James 4:13-15,

“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.’ Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”

It also brings to mind Proverbs 16:9,

“The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.”

I need to conduct myself in wisdom around unbelievers (Greek: literally – “redeeming the time).

I would like to pray for others like Epaphras – literally “agonizing’ in prayer for them. I have a long way to go before my prayer life reaches that level of intensity.

“Lord, help me to shepherd people with integrity of heart, and to lead them with skillful hands.”

Observation

Jeremiah 8:10-11 is repeated from earlier (6:13-14). God is obviously concerned about how the leaders take care of His people,

“…Prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit. They dress the wound of My people as though it were not serious.”

“Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush…” Jeremiah 8:12a

“…They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning.” Jeremiah 9:5b

“This is what the Lord says, ‘Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,’ declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:23-24

“…For all these nations are really uncircumcised, and even the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.” Jeremiah 9:26b

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” Colossians 3:1-4
“In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of His wonders, they did not believe. So, He ended their days in futility and their years in terror.”
Psalm 78:32-33

Application

We know that we’ve sunk to the depths of spiritual depravity when we ceased to feel shame over our sin; when it doesn’t even cause us to blush. I don’t want to ever reach a point of callousness where I am insensitive to the conviction of God’s Spirit.

What a waste of energy when we “weary ourselves” sinning!

True circumcision in God’s eyes (“a setting apart”) is not an external act but an internal transformation. “Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

How often I forget that Christ “is my life.” (Colossians 3:4) Too often I live like I can find life apart from Him; and this leads to “futility” as Psalm 78:33 mentioned.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to set my heart and mind on the ‘things above’ not on ‘earthly things.’ I ‘have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy.” (1 Peter 4:3)

Observation

“Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury …and follow other gods you have not known, and then come and stand before Me in this house, which bears My name, and say, ‘We are safe – safe to do all these detestable things?’ ‘…But I have been watching declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 7:9-11

“Am I the One they are provoking? declares the Lord. Are they not rather harming themselves to their own shame?” Jeremiah 7:19

“I have listened attentively, but they do not say what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Each pursues his own course like a horse charging into battle.” Jeremiah 8:6

“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.” Colossians 2:8-10

“…Reality is found in Christ.” Colossians 2:17

“What we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done. …So the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget His deeds but would keep His commands.” Psalm 78:3, 6-7

Application

Sometimes we/I do things as if no one is watching, especially not God. God’s response is that “we harm ourselves to our own shame.” Too often I am like that horse, charging into battle, pursuing my own course. (Jer. 8:6) I need to remember that reality is found in Christ, not the things I chase after independently of Him. His fullness lives within me! O that I would live like it!

Passing the baton of faith to the next generation needs to be more than a verbal exchange. It needs to be something which is lived-out. It reminds me of the old saying, “Faith is better ‘caught’ than ‘taught.”

Prayer

“Lord, once again I pray for consistency in my walk. I want to follow You consistently. I want to obey You consistently. Please grant me strength, determination and discipline to be faithful.”

Jeremiah 4:19-6:14; Colossians 1:21-2:7; Psalm 77:1-20; Proverbs 24:23-25

Observation

Sometimes I am surprised by what I find in Scripture. Jeremiah 5:7-9 is an example of one of those passages:

“Why should I forgive you? Your children have forsaken Me and sworn by gods that are not gods. I supplied all their needs, yet they committed adultery and thronged to the houses of prostitutes. They are well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for another man’s wife. Should I not punish them for this?’ declares the Lord. ‘Should I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?”

Jeremiah 5:25b is surprisingly powerful and succinct,

“Your sins have deprived you of good.”

Jeremiah 6:13b-14 is a sad state of affairs, and unfortunately sounds like our present times,

“…Prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit. They dress the wound of My people as though it were not serious.”

“The mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints …is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
Colossians 1:27

“My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:2-3

I have never noticed Psalm 77:19-20 before, but it sounds like a reference to God leading His people through the Red Sea,

“Your path led through the sea, Your way through the mighty waters, though Your footprints were not seen. You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.”

Application

I wonder how often my sins deprive me of good. It’s a powerful thought. Obviously sin always deprives us of good. But, sometimes we feel/live like there is no consequence for sin.

I wonder if the reference to prophets and priests dressing the wounds of God’s people as if they were not serious is an indictment of how sin is handled. It sounds like God is saying that His leaders minimize the effects of sin upon His people.

What a thought that “Christ in me” is the hope of glory! And, that “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ!” This should affect the intensity and passion with which I seek after God!

Prayer

“Lord, help me to seek after You like buried treasure.”
